A SEPARATION (Iran) PG(older) 123 mins. Ashjar Farhadi’s Oscar, Golden Bear, Cesar, GG…. winning human drama of a married couple are faced with a difficult decision - to improve the life of their child by moving to another country or to stay in Iran and look after a deteriorating parent who has Alzheimer's disease. “This exquisite film begins slowly but soon grabs you by the throat as it explores the fine line between truth, honesty, loyalty and justice. The performances are all excellent. It’s a wonderful film.” Margaret , ATM, ABC
MARGARET: I love the little insights, going to the petrol station, he makes her go get the change from the attendant because he didn’t actually fill the tank, it’s such a little insight in his character. These insights into the legal system in Iran, which are so interesting and textured because it is a completely different system from ours. But aiming at the same thing, aiming at ultimate justice. I just, I love this film, I love… really love it. I’m giving it five stars, it’s rare for me, but I just embraced it so wholeheartedly.

DAVID: I’m going to join you and embrace it too. I’m giving it five stars, it’s a wonderful film.

Acclaimed Cold War spy thriller screens in Port Fairy

MATT NEAL WARRNAMBOOL STANDARD 19 Apr, 2012 04:00 AM

A CLASSIC tale of espionage and intrigue comes to south-west screens for the first time tomorrow.
Port Fairy Film Society will host two screenings of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy at the Reardon Theatre, with a matinee at 1pm and a night showing from 7.30pm.

The film is an adaption of John le Carré’s Cold War thriller about a Soviet mole in the British secret service and spy George Smiley’s efforts to uncover the mole.

Turned into a successful mini-series in 1979 starring Alec Guinness as Smiley, this big-screen version maintains the Cold War setting and stars Gary Oldman as Smiley.

Oldman was nominated for a best actor Academy Award for his turn — one of three Oscar nominations Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy received.

The film also stars Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hinds, Benedict Cumberbatch, Toby Jones and John Hurt.

Port Fairy Film Society is screening the 1944 musical Meet Me In St Louis as part of its classic matinee series on Tuesday from 1.30pm.

Other future screenings for the group include fund-raiser showings of the Oscar-winning movie The Descendents on May 4 and the romance Letters To Juliet on May 15.

Corangamite Film Society continues its season on May 3 with a double bill featuring Australian drama Eye Of The Storm and French thriller Hidden. They screen from 7pm at the Killara Centre.

Spies in Port Fairy this Friday!

                                                     Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy trailer

This month's screening happens this Friday, 20th of April, at 1pm a matinee and at 7.30 pm an evening screening.

It is the brilliant Spy thriller  Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy
**** Margaret ***** David, ATM ABC

Based on John Le-Carre’s  novel , Tomas Alfredson has brilliantly remade spy thriller set in the 1970’s at the height of the Cold War. George Smiley (Gary Oldman), a disgraced British spy, is rehired in secret by his government - which fears that the British Secret Intelligence Service, has been compromised by a double agent working for the Soviets.   Could it be Alleline (Toby Jones), Haydon (Colin Firth), Bland (Ciarán Hinds), Estherhase (David Dencik) – 5 Stars,
Phillip French & Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

Oldman is superb as the ever-present Smiley (portrayed by Alec Guinness in the 1979 TV series), while Colin Firth shows great presence as the elegant, confident Bill Haydon, code-named Tailor. The fact that the physicality of
the actors is so different works in the film's favour with Toby Jones as good as ever as the smarmy Percy Alleline (Tinker) and Ciaran Hiands's large features are imposing as Roy Bland (Soldier). But they are not the only rotten apple contenders. For maximum enjoyment, do not expect a run-of-the-mill thriller with linear storytelling and a simple resolution. There is far more complexity to absorb.

Le Carré is a master of the genre and under Alfredson's dense direction, the revitalisation of this classic is elevated to new heights as well as a new audience. (Louis Keller cited in Rotten Tomatoes)

This Fridays Screening is the English indie movie "Submarine"

From  David Stratton "At the Movies "
"In  Swansea, Wales, in the mid-1980s, before the advent of mobile  phones and social networks, 15-year-old Oliver, CRAIG ROBERTS, lives with his parents in an ordinary street in an ordinary part of  town.

His Dad, Lloyd, NOAH TAYLOR, is a marine biologist who  suffers from depression; his mother, Jill, SALLY HAWKINS, seems  frustrated with her life, and Oliver gets very upset when he thinks his Mum is spending too much time with Graham, PADDY CONSIDINE, a New Age guru and former boyfriend of his mum.

Oliver, meanwhile, has fallen in love with a girl at school, Jordana, YASMIN PAIGE, who has definite ideas about how high school courtships should proceed." 4 stars *****

This movie is the work of first time debut feature director Richard  Aoyade and is a small but beautifully made film that looks at the common themes of adolescence but is carried out in an original and often quirky way. The film is rated M and goes for 97 minutes.

My Tehran for Sale

Film goers are in for an interesting experience when the Port Fairy Film
Society continues with its 2012 program showing "My Tehran for Sale" at
the Reardon Theatre this Friday at 7.30pm.

You would have to be on another planet not to at least have heard of
this film. It came to prominence last year when Adelaide based Iranian /
Australian Director Granaz Moussavi was arrested in Iran and sentenced
to 70 lashes.

Luckily public pressure around the world, supported by a massive social
media campaign, forced a change of heart by the Iranian authorities.

It seems this action, supposedly because official permission for the
film was not obtained, plays true in many of the themes present
throughout the film. Namely state control, repression and rebellion.

While travellers to Iran speak highly of the country, from a political
side not much seems to have changed in recent years. It is indeed a
brave director who films "on site" and addresses these issues.

Moussavi is a celebrated poet in her home country and this film contains
much evidence of these poetic influences in the words and visual scenes.

The central character is Marzieh, an actress who is isolated from her
family while working, behind closed doors, on a politically sensitive
performance piece. Through friends she meets Saman, an
Iranian/Australian who's come to Tehran to make money to pay off debts
incurred back home.

All does not end well in the relationship and both characters are forced
to reassess their lives.

For those of us with a media / US dominated view of contemporary Iran
this is an important insight into life in contemporary Tehran. It
illustrates the frustrations and anguish of young people as they attempt
to find personal and cultural freedom.

Shot guerrilla style entirely in Tehran it gives us a rare insight into
this culturally repressed society through the eyes of the central
characters.

The performances are strong with the city scenes playing an excellent
supporting role. Director Moussavi's poetic background gives texture to
the film, the shots chosen build on an understanding of a city she
obviously loves but has also given her much pain.

A rare treat for filmgoers in the south west. My Tehran for Sale screens
in Port Fairy, 1.00pm and 7.30pm on Friday 17th.
Coming up next month is Submarine. March 16th.

See you in the front stalls.  Steve

2012 PORT FAIRY FILM SOCIETY MEMBERSHIPS

Unlike the Hoyts, Village, Palace, commercial Cinema operators, the Port Fairy Film Society is a community group of non-professional volunteer film lovers who decided to continue to show films in Port Fairy, after the private operator decided it was not viable to continue.

Whilst anyone who buys a ticket, can come to the public, ticketed admission, 14 Community Fundraiser films, Film Festivals and 21 Summer Movies that are also shown in Port Fairy, the Film Distributors do not allow non-members to attend Film Society screenings.

In 2012-13, the PFFS will face greater costs for its screenings and the probability we may have to significantly upgrade our digital projection systems, as most 35mm film will be phased out by the end of 2012. Only limited imported prints will be available.
Consequently, the PFFS has increased its Membership fees, for the first time since 2004.

In 2012, the Port Fairy Film Society has 12 monthly 3rd Friday films and eight 4th Tuesday Classic Film Matinees (Feb-May and Aug-Nov).

2011 PFFS memberships are valid until February 2012.
2012 PFFS memberships are valid until February 2013.

We sell annual ($110/90), 6 ($55/45), a minimum 3 ($30/24) memberships at the Reardon Theatre prior to our screenings.

The PFFS membership comes with bonus 8, 2, 1 Classic Tuesday matinee sessions (Feb-May and Aug-Nov).

To become a member of the Film Society, like any club, we will need your name and address,  if you wish to see our films.

If you are a Visitor to Port Fairy, we will allow you to part (half)pay for your minimum annual membership, with the balance to be paid when you return.
